Nukes are banned. WW2 Earth is united, and so is Remnant. Salem and her posse will sit out of the conflict, so will the Grimm.

2022.01.18 10:33 Vinylcrackhead The biggest risk to steam deck... Is us.

So this might get me down voted to hell but hear me out! This is just a thought for discussion, I'm not dying on any hills here. Sorry this is so long, being cloistered in my house my wife doesn't care and my dog, although a good listener, isn't great with back and forth on these matters...
Valve have, if all the previews are correct and they deliver what they promise, knocked it out the park with Steam Deck.
The gaming industry has come a lot way in the 30 odd years I've been a gamer. First it was only kids that were into games, then they grew up and became teenagers, the birth of the basement dwelling mouth breather pcmasterrace stereotype, then came mass adoption on console and since then pc gaming has been the reserve of (and I say this as a proud member) freaks, geeks and nerds. As an example, I work in IT infrastructure and even I sometimes find the PC gaming space too technical sometimes, I just want it to work.
So why are we (and I say we by virtue of the fact this is a steam deck thread and we're all going to be technology enthusiasts) the biggest risk?
I believe for the Steam Deck to work as a proposition, mass market appeal is the ticket. In order for Steam Deck compatibility and it being a consideration for developers to be a priority (rather than just dumping it onto the proton layer and hoping for the best) you need millions of users. Valve also seem to know this, the setup seems to be targeted at "just working" but also satisfying all us with potential upgradability and repair, no system lock in etc etc.
To highlight my next thought ill share something from my last job. I worked for a very high end audio manufacturing company who were struggling to get market adoption outside of enthusiasts. When we actually got customers in front of high end systems that pretty much got their credit cards out but otherwise we were struggling. Going round every customer one by one isn't scaleable. We made one significant change, a change that enraged enthusiasts but tripled the amount of mass market type business inside a year.
We shut down the customer forum. Not only shut it down but deleted it. Completely.
All the enthusiasts who although great advocates for the brand, didn't actually spend that much money because they had the technical ability to create workarounds to get performance on a budget but at the cost of convenience and user experience. These workarounds all existed and to a degree were supported on the customer forum. The reason our profitable customers increased significantly when we closed it was potential customers having a look on Google and being freaked by lots of very passionate enthusiasts complaining that decisions made on a product development level didn't satisfy their extreme edge case usage and further, others agreeing that it should satisfy it because they weren't aware that it was an edge case usage.
Valve are trying to play both sides here, which is admirable, but my concern is that customers who are new to PC games or might opt for a Steam Deck over a Switch OLED for instance because they want to play more mature and a wider variety of games, might be put off by enthusiastic people like ourselves complaining that (for instance) "only an SD card? It's not fast enough" (it is...) or "the 64GB is pointless" (it's not...) or "that resolution is stupid" (it's not).
For Steam to pull this off they need mass market adoption as this equals developers taking it seriously. Demand. The other side of the coin is Supply but that's in the hands of the chip gods (interestingly that audio company had to redesign a board mid generation because Tesla had bought the next 10 year supply of a particular component from the only supplier who could manufacture it...)
So where does this lead? I think Valve will need to be extremely careful in terms of a) how they structure their first year reviews - get them to mass market reviewers as much as possible and b) give all us the ability to be geeks but make the user experience so damn easy for a mass market consumer and I'd also argue c) once the initial sales bump via Steam is done and the launch window is past making them available in stores is going to be really important.
I'm so God damn excited for Steam Deck, it's a great looking piece of kit and yes, I will be doing all sorts of dumb shit with it but I think we all need to remember, the more people who buy it, the more influence it has with investors for developers and the more priority compatibility gets (I'm specifically thinking about true next gen games here).
Anyway, just some thoughts!
